Is your garage door squeaking or chattering? These are signs that your door is in need of lubrication. Garage Doors are one of the largest moving objects in your home. Taking care and maintaining your garage door is essential for smooth performance and longevity in your garage door. If you open up your garage door 3 or 4 times a day, On average you will be opening your garage door 1000 to 1500 times in a single year. Lubricating your garage door is one of the easiest ways to take care of your garage door.
Silicone-Based Lubricants – Silicone-based lubricants are used to reduce the friction between two objects to allow for more freedom of movement between them. Silicone-based Lubricants soak into the objects that you are lubricating, making them water-resistant! Silicone Lubricant is great for any weather conditions making it great for colder areas.
Lithium-Based Lubricants (Not Recommended)– Lithium Base Lubricant is great for heavy-duty lubrication, made for a medal-on-medal application, adding a rust-inhibiting layer behind protecting from corrosion. Lithium Lubricant is best used in temperatures from 0℉ to 300℉.
Hinge Sleeves – These are the sleeves that hold the rollers in place. Each roller should be going through both sides of the hinge sleeve. In order to lubricate the hinge sleeve, Spray the lubricant on both holes.
Rollers – A roller is the piece of the garage door that goes into the track that allows it to travel up and down. In order to Lubricate, Spray the Lubricant in the connection of where the shaft meets the bearing of the roller
Hinge Sleeves – These are the sleeves that hold the rollers in place. Each roller should be going through both sides of the hinge sleeve. In order to lubricate the hinge sleeve, Spray the lubricant on both holes.
Bottom of Cables – At the very bottom of the garage door, you will be able to see where the Cables meet the garage door. You should spray the lubricant onto the loop of the Cables. Remember to not touch the cables with your hands as they are under tension
Bearings – The bearings are located above the top of the track and are what allow the large shaft above the door to rotate. There should be drums (What the Cable connects to) that are pushed up on the bearing on both sides. You can spray the lubricant in between the drum and the head plate, or you can go around the outside of the tracks and spray the head plate as well.
Track Horns – The last place to lubricate is the Track horns. You should spray your lubricant on the curved part of the track where it goes from vertical to horizontal. This will allow for smoother transitions.
Opener – To lubricate your garage door opener, we recommend you spray your lubricant onto the chain, and the trolley, which is what is connected to the long rail on your garage door opener.
Run the Door – Lastly, make sure you run the door multiple times which allows you to spread the lubricant evenly throughout the door.
